The new Tameside Macmillan Unit opened its doors in February 2017, offering essential, local treatment and support services for the 1000+ Tameside and Glossop residents who are diagnosed with cancer each year.
Design Goals
Patient centred design was key to IBI Group’s development of this new facility, with input taken from cancer survivors from the local area. They wanted the facility to feel calming and less clinical than a normal hospital, so bespoke artwork and bright, feature colours were used throughout, and where possible natural woods were chosen to offer a warm, natural aesthetic.
Although there was a need for a non-clinical feel, the IBI Group needed to ensure the facility was durable, and easy to clean & maintain. CS Acrovyn was specified for the public areas, for its stylish, durable finishes that would help achieve this design objective.
Results
To aid mobility for frail patients, and to offer a warm, soothing aesthetic, CS supplied the HRWS6C Timber Handrail in Oak, with stainless steel brackets and end caps. Due to the modern, curved design of some of the internal walls, CS had to form the timber handrail to suit the curve.
In addition, CS supplied a collection of 80 Series Acrovyn Crash rails on cushion mounts (BCR80 variation) and SCG50 corner guards, installed in the waiting areas and some clinical areas, offering heavy duty protection for the walls and corners. CS Acrovyn Textured sheet was also supplied for the disposal hold area, to protect the walls from bumps and scrapes from passing trolleys and bins.
The interior protection package from CS allows the Tameside Macmillan Unit to care for its cancer patients in a calming, non-clinical environment, without the worry of impact damage and high maintenance costs.
